DNA Sexing Test
Complete the DNA Sexing Test Form below and you will receive an email with instructions on submitting your samples, and where to send the samples. Once we receive your samples, DNA sexing tests usually takes 5 to 7 business days for test results. If you have selected AvianPro to send you both Leg Ring and Microchips, do not send your feather samples until you first receive your Leg Ring and Microchip kits. Each kit will be numbered according to your bird list below.
AvianPro provides accurate DNA sexing from feathers for most bird species. Feather sexing is just as reliable as blood-based DNA sexing but is less invasive, as it eliminates the need for blood collection and minimizes stress for both you and your bird during sample collection.
When collecting samples, be sure to wash your hands thoroughly between handling different birds, and use a fresh zip-lock bag for each sample. Avoid touching the tips of the feather shafts, as this is where the DNA-containing tissue is located.
Once your bird is secure, pluck at least 5 small chest or breast feathers (there’s no need to use blood or primary feathers). Some birds may twitch slightly during feather plucking, but this is harmless. Smaller birds, like finches and small parakeets, may need additional feathers.
Place the feathers into the labeled zip-lock bag for that specific bird. Since there is no bleeding involved, the birds can be released immediately after sampling.
